The Story Behind Our Flavors
It was many, many years ago that Maria set off from the Sardinian port of Cagliari for a new, exciting life in Africa. Travelling with her were some of her family's most treasured possessions. Riches far too valuable to be entrusted to the timeworn, scuffed leather trunk that accompanied her on the voyage.
A number of years later that time came, and those priceless possessions once more saw the light of day. The delicious recipes that Maria’s family had created and passed down and perfected in Sardinia and around Italy once more filled the air with their irresistible aromas when she opened her kitchen in Senderwood in 2005.
Maria, now known more affectionately as Nonna Mia, was soon a legend. As word spread, more and more came to Nonna Mia’s Kitchen to have their taste buds transfixed and their minds transported back to a time when rush hour consisted of two donkeys meeting on a dirt track.
When every day was one to be chewed over and savoured, and when the appreciation of food meant considerably more than life itself, inspiring Maria to spread the joy further, by creating Nonna Mia’s Pronto.
After all, without good food, life is meaningless. Or, at the very least, extremely dull. Which amounts to the same thing, as Nonna often says.
Nonna Mia's Kitchen
Nonna Mia's Kitchen, a restaurant in the heart of Senderwood, was opened in October 2005 with a dream and a book full of Sardinian recipes from Nonna. The idea was to serve authentic Italian cuisine with a contemporary flair that would make people come back for more. The recipes, all handed down and brought to South Africa by Nonna herself, was the differentiator in the local Italian restaurant industry. The impact and reaction was immediate. With a clean, simple and casual decor, seating 80 people at a time, the food was the hero.

We all have memories of stepping into our Nonna’s house when we were younger and getting bombarded with aromas that define ‘home’ for us. We all have memories of our Nonna being in the kitchen all day and cooking our favourite dishes. We all have memories of our Nonna. That is what we are all about at Nonna’s Italian Kitchen. That defines who we are. We are an authentic Italian food bar, with a contemporary twist.

Our latest Nonna’s Italian Kitchen branch in Florida Road, which welcomed its first guests in January 2024. This new location marks our second venture in KwaZulu-Natal, and we're excited to bring our delicious and authentic Italian cuisine to the vibrant Florida Road community. At Nonna’s, we pride ourselves on delivering a genuine taste of Italy, crafted with love and premium ingredients.
